I spent 2 hours tonight at a mixer with a bunch of contractors. Met too many people with absolutely no understanding of personal space or who were drinking like there’s no tomorrow.
I’m a fairly reserved person in general, but for some reason the thought of getting hammered in a “professional” environment just seems extremely wrong. I get that our professions have fundamentally different work cultures associated with them, but I don’t think that a mixer is productive if you can’t remember anyone/anything about it the next day...

I can never figure out if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that nobody ever invites me to those sorts of things...

I was one of 4 Architects there in a group of 150 contractors and construction suppliers. I’ll basically attend anything, but it bites me occasionally.
None of my coworkers who are my age attend anything so I feel like the networking helps me to potentially stand out.

I haven’t been invited to any sort of non-family gathering in over a year...

Not sure about the close talking, but free beer always brings out the thirst in people.

My dad is a contractor. For years he threw his company’s Christmas party at a local little Italian restaurant. Every year they would drink them out of beer. You’d be surprised what they can remember the next day. When you have a tolerance built up ...

My wife maintains an excellent relationship with the contractors she uses and that really helps her as a program manager. How much it will help her as an architect, I don’t know. A few years ago she had to deal with a bad contractor due to public bid requirements. At one point, the guy threatened her because she stood her ground and wouldn’t accept his shoddy work. Several of his own subs immediately came to her defense. They were locals and she had earned their respect and loyalty over the years. The guy’s company failed to complete the job and his bonding company stepped in. As far as I know, the lawsuits are still pending, the guy lost his company, and the local contractors are still loyal to my wife despite being screwed over by this guy.
Yeah, good contacts are important.

Dudes face was like 3” from mine, I couldn’t make eye contact, because we’d have made face contact.

One of my absolute favorite builds of all time. Boss9 + AWD + massive slicks = win.
